It’s fascinating how the success of Apple’s M-series chips was fueled by Intel’s own top engineers.

Years ago, Intel decided to shut down certain U.S. sites, assuming talent would relocate to their HQ in Oregon.

Instead, many of the engineers joined Apple, where Apple opened local facilities (and offered better compensation). These experts helped Apple build industry-defining processors.

This is a reminder of how a rigid “centralize-everything” approach can unintentionally drive away the very talent a company needs most.

We’re now seeing certain organizations adopt similar thinking with their return-to-office policies. In-person interaction may be vital for some functions, but forcing everyone back into a single hub will encourage top talent to seek more flexible opportunities elsewhere.

Another crucial lesson is that recruiting the best can have an outsized impact. If you want immediate expertise, go where the experts already are and invest in talent that’s already at the top of their game.

Leadership decisions can make or break a company’s long-term future. Thinking carefully about the people involved and giving them the environment they need to excel often yields the best outcomes.
