🧠 Is Generative AI going to shrink our critical thinking?

🧠 Is Generative AI going to shrink our critical thinking?

A new paper by researchers from Carnegie Mellon & Microsoft Research explores that idea. The authors caution us that "the irony of automation is that by offloading work, we risk losing the very judgment we need when it matters most." If you’re building or using GenAI tools, this study is a wake-up call to not trade discernment for more efficiency.

🔍 The team surveyed 319 knowledge workers, collecting 936 real-world examples of GenAI use (ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, etc.) and focusing on how tools like these impact critical thinking at work.

The findings:

👉 More confidence in AI = less critical thinking. Users with high trust in GenAI were less likely to scrutinize or edit outputs.

👉 More confidence in self = more critical thinking. Workers who believed in their own abilities were more likely to verify, refine, and challenge GenAI results.

👉 Critical thinking has shifted from creation to oversight: verifying facts, editing tone, tailoring context.

👉 The biggest risks are overreliance, loss of independent problem-solving, and passive workflows - especially in routine or low-stakes tasks.

💡 What can we do about it? Recommendations:

⚡ Reflection: prompting yourself to pause and critically assess AI-generated content - ask to verify facts, clarify goals, or consider alternatives.

⚡ Learning: use GenAI tools to not only provide answers but also help understand the reasoning, techniques, or best practices behind them - turn each interaction into a learning opportunity.

⚡ Evaluation: ask for ways to assess the quality, accuracy, and relevance of the outputs from AI - ask for sources, uncertainties, or quality indicators that support them.

⚡Identify limitations and uncertainties: seek to reveal inner workings, limitations, and boundaries of GenAI answers to understand what the system can and can’t do, and not over-trust it.
