🚁 Automating an Air Ambulance Salesforce org ✈️
About 12 years ago, I had started working more heavily with Salesforce and was asked to fix a Salesforce trigger for an air ambulance company.
During the process, I noticed something odd — they were calculating the distances between airports manually! 😮
I then proposed a solution: automating the calculation of distances using the Haversine formula (it is what the DISTANCE function uses but none of those functions existed at that time).
That mathematical formula uses trigonometry to determine the shortest distance between two points on a sphere, accounting for Earth's curvature, given the latitudes and longitudes.
The Math I learned in that Oceanography class was finally paying off! 🐳😅
By implementing it as a Salesforce trigger (flow was vastly inferior and unsuitable at that time), I hoped to avoid manual errors and increase the speed of dispatching critical air ambulance services. 🚑
Sometimes a small change can make a huge impact, especially in time-sensitive industries. The stakeholder was so happy that they sent Tiff's Treats Cookie Delivery to me and the team! 🍪🥛😄
